Cinnamon rolls have a surprisingly ancient and global heritage that spans continents and cultures! The concept traces back to ancient Rome, where sweet, spiced breads were enjoyed by the wealthy, but the modern cinnamon roll as we know it emerged in Sweden during the 1920s as “kanelbulle.” These Swedish treats became so culturally significant that Sweden officially celebrates “Kanelbullens Dag” (National Cinnamon Bun Day) every October 4th since 1999 – a holiday so beloved that offices and schools often close early for cinnamon bun breaks! The rolls made their way to America through Scandinavian immigrants in the Midwest, where they evolved into the larger, glaze-topped versions we know today.
