The chocolate chip cookie was a happy accident! In 1938, Ruth Wakefield at the Toll House Inn added broken chocolate pieces to her butter cookie dough, expecting them to melt evenly. Instead, she created America’s most beloved cookie. Nestlé bought her recipe for a lifetime supply of chocolate! The cookies became so popular that Massachusetts declared it the official state cookie in 1997, and National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day is celebrated every August 4th.
